Saturday, April 30, proved to be a deadly evening after nine people, including children, were killed in four accidents throughout Palm Beach and St. Lucie Counties.

Single-Vehicle Accidents Kill Three

A 54-year-old Boca man was killed in a single-vehicle crash Saturday around 8:30 p.m. at Lyons Road and Southwest 3rd Street in Boca Raton. The police report stated that the man was traveling east on Southwest 3rd Street in the right-hand lane approaching the intersection at Lyons Road.

Witnesses reported that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and appeared to have one or two flat tires. The driver lost control of the vehicle in the intersection and collided with the pole of a traffic light and a palm tree on the northeast corner of Lyons Road. The driver died at the scene of the accident.

Then, shortly after 2 a.m. on Sunday, a Lincoln Town Car was traveling west on Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard when the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a light pole. Officers reported that the passenger in the vehicle died at the scene of the crash and the driver was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

A West Palm Beach resident was also killed on Saturday evening on Interstate 95 in St. Lucie County after he drove off the road and struck two trees.

The causes of all three accidents remain under investigation.

Jupiter Accident Kills Six

Two children, three teens and one adult were killed in what many are considering the most horrific crash they have seen in the area in years.

Around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, all eight victims were traveling in a minivan southbound on Interstate 95 in Jupiter when the tread of a tire separated causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The van swerved into the median, where it hit a barrier wall before spinning into the path of a Kia Sorento. The driver of the Sorento suffered only minor injuries.

It is unknown how many passengers from the minivan were ejected from the vehicle, though paramedics and several agencies rushed to the scene and tried to save the victims who were found lying in the road. It remains unknown if the victims were wearing seatbelts.

Three children, ages five, 14 and 18, died at the scene of the accident, and two children, ages seven and 17, along with a 31-year-old adult died after being transported to local hospitals. The driver of the van and another passenger were seriously injured.

Portions of the highway were closed until 3 a.m. as the scene was investigated.
