General Motors Aware Of Ignition Defect In 2001

Information released on Wednesday by embattled auto maker General Motors has revealed that the company had been receiving reports of ignition problems in some vehicles as early as 2001approximately three years earlier than they had previously disclosed.

The defect is now being linked to at least 30 accidents and more than 10 fatalities over the past decade, despite GM stating in 2001 that they had discovered some ignition systems in some Saturn Ion vehicles but that a change in the design “had resolved the problem”.

However, in light of the recent recall, documents that were filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on February 24th declared that the auto maker had discovered in 2004 that if a motorist bumped the ignition in some makes and models, it could cause the vehicle to turn off and consequently, shut off the engine and any ancillary devices running off it.

With safety regulators having received at least 70 complaints from certain Saturn drivers since 2003 and numerous others, Congress is continuing their investigation into the matter while GM has issued a full recall for affected vehicles.
