GM Recalling 3.16 Million Vehicles for Problems with Ignition Switch

General Motors has announced that they will be recalling 3.16 million cars in the United States due to an issue with the ignition switch. According to GM, the ignition switch is not the same one used in the Chevy Cobalt models that were recalled earlier this year, however, the problem is similar.

According to GM, the ignition switch in the 2000 to 2014 models affected could inadvertently move out of the run position if the key is carrying extra weight and experiences some event that could jar it out of position.

The following vehicle models have been affected by this recall:

• Buick Lacrosse, MY 2005-2009
• Chevrolet Impala, MY 2006-2014
• Cadillac Deville, MY 20002005
• Cadillac DTS, MY 20042011
• Buick Lucerne, MY 20062011
• Buick Regal LS & GS, MY 20042005
• Chevy Monte Carlo, MY 20062008

Since January, GM has recalled nearly 20 million vehicles for a number of safety issues. The ignition switch disaster, however, has been linked to dozens of motor vehicle accidents and allegedly caused 13 deaths.

Several days ago, General Motors recalled nearly 500,000 Camaros due to similar issues with the ignition switch and FOB. A review of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations consumer complaints revealed several instances in which a vehicle was knocked out of the run position; one consumer said their vehicle was traveling 60 miles per hour when the problem occurred. GM is aware of at least three accidents and four injuries linked to the Camaro defect.
