Seminole Ridge High School Closes Auto Shop after Students Seriously Injured in Accident

Seminole Ridge High School has shuttered the doors to its auto body shop indefinitely after two students were seriously injured during class on April 11.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue responded to a traumatic accident at the high school in Loxahatchee on Friday morning. One student was flown by trauma hawk to St. Marys Medical Center and the other was taken by ambulance to Palms West Hospital.

According to the CBS 12 News, 15-year-old Justin Perez suffered a punctured lung and broken bones due to the horrific accident. No further information has been released about the second accident victim.

Details on how the two were injured are still unknown, Perez has no memory of the accident and only recalls waking up after being hit by a car.

This is the second serious accident at the school. In September 2013, Dustin Reinhardt was rushed to the hospital after a tire exploded in his face and he suffered a skull fracture. Reinhardt survived the accident, but lost his eye and part of his brain. He is still at a long-term recovery center and it could be years before the extent of his injuries are fully known. The family is suing the school district, but the case is still in the investigative stages.

The auto services academy program is an in-house magnet program that teaches teens about automotive maintenance and repair. Although there is a similar program at Park Vista High School in Boynton Beach, there have not been any reported accidents.
