South Florida Pushes Bicycle Safety

As of 2006, Florida law states that drivers operating any type of motor vehicle are now required, by the state, to allow at least 3 feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist on the road. While the law has been in place for almost 7 years, many Florida motorists are either unaware of the law or choose to simply ignore the regulation.

In an effort to boost bicyclist mindfulness as well as shed light on this Florida bicycle law, the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is starting a public awareness campaign to educate and remind Florida drivers about the 3-foot law.

The bike safety campaign kicked off on September 17th and is running through October 16th. MPOs campaign, Keep your distance. At least 3 feet. Its the law! hopes to encourage safe driving behaviors as well as improving the overall safety of South Florida roads.

To target the general public, bicycle safety displays will be placed at the Sawgrass Mills Mall, as well as the libraries, police stations, and various sites across Broward County. All Florida drivers must remember the 3-feet rule for the safety of all bicyclists across the state.
