Types of Maritime Injury Claims

Maritime law can become very complex.  Our experienced maritime injury attorneys are well-versed in the Jones Act, the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act, and the Death on the High Seas Act as well as general maritime injury claims.  Contact us today if you have suffered an injury while on the water to explore your legal options.

Jones Act

Also known as the Merchant Marine Act of 1920, the Jones Act is a federal statute that allows an injured sailor who spends more than 30 percent of his or her time in service on a sea-faring vessel to make claims and collect compensation from his or her employers for negligence.

Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act

The Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act extends coverage to workers who have been injured but are not eligible to seek compensation under the Jones Act.  This includes dock workers, outer continental shelf workers and U.S. government contractors working in foreign countries.

Death on the High Seas Act

Originally intended to allow dependents of seamen who died at sea due to another’s negligence, this act has since extended to include wrongful death claims caused by airplane accidents over water that occur beyond U.S. waters.

Whether you have been injured while working on a boat; while using a personal watercraft; or while on a cruise ship; our maritime lawyers can help you.  An accident can happen in an instant but the effects from an injury can last a lifetime.  If you were injured due to the negligence of another, contact the personal injury lawyers at Gordon and Doner today to see if you may have a claim.
