Practice Areas: Veteran Benefits
Joshua Stone is an Accredited Non-Attorney Claims Representative/Agent for veterans benefits from the Department of Veterans Administration. A veteran himself, Mr. Stone's tireless commitment to helping other veterans receive their benefits has made him an incredible asset to the clients of Gordon & Doner.
Mr. Stone's responsibilities include new client intake, medical records review, case work-up, pre-hearings, hearings, and countless additional duties.
During his time in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Stone was deployed overseas on multiple occasions with the U.S. Marine Corps as a Combat Medic. Since that time, he has worked in the healthcare field as a licensed nurse in the state of West Virginia. He is also a current member of the National Organization of Veterans' Advocates (NOVA).
During his eight years of service in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Stone volunteered as a hospital corpsman. His service included an assignment at a Navy hospital in Bethesda and deployment to a combat area in Afghanistan. His experience overseas and his extensive hospital and medical training help him relate to injured veterans seeking assistance.
"I have been through what these guys are going through," Mr. Stone says, "It gives me a unique perspective on where they're coming from."
Mr. Stone says all injured veterans need help navigating the complex processes of application and appeal for veterans benefits. He said nearly 70 percent of first-time applicants get denied when they apply on their own.
"It's extremely complicated and there is a lot of bureaucratic paperwork that really can bog the average person down. The VA throws a lot of paper at you," Mr. Stone says. "Our job is to wade through all that paperwork and give the client the best chance to win their claim -- and sooner rather than later."
Mr. Stone says it is an honor to work with veterans his own age who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also finds it rewarding to help Vietnam veterans.
"Many of them have been fighting for benefits for a really long time," said Mr. Stone. "Those veterans are the ones who laid the groundwork for my generation in the service."
