As thousands of Floridians traveled up and down Interstate 75 on Friday, October 5, 2012, vision impaired with heavy rains, driving became rather difficult. Combining bad weather and heavy traffic is typically an equation for disaster.
On this Friday afternoon, the accidents began with one car colliding with another around Lakewood Ranch on I-75. One accident led to another, and another, and within minutes twenty vehicles had collided. The crashes occurred during torrential rains on an otherwise clear day.
Following the chain reaction of traffic collision, about 50 cars total had been involved. While no fatalities occurred due to the auto accidents, two accident victims were flown by helicopter to a trauma facility. In addition, 20 people were treated at the scene of the accident and another 32 were taken in ambulances to the nearest hospital.
Sarasota County fire department and the Florida Highway Patrol were at the scene of the accident helping victims and organizing traffic. Officials managed to clear the roads in a relatively quick manner, only causing a few hours of delay on Interstate 75.
