Emergency Medical Technician Chris Fowler had an unexpected stop while responding to an emergency call Monday evening when a 225-pound black bear ran into the side of his ambulance. The bizarre ambulance accident happened near Weeki Wachee, a community of 12 in Hernando County.
As reported in The Tampa Bay Times, Fowler stopped his ambulance and ensured another unit was dispatched to the emergency site. The bear's force left the vehicle with dents in the side step and patient cabin, and the front fender of the ambulance was completely ripped away.
Unfortunately, the bear was unable to withstand the impact of the collision, limping off into an area of marsh and passing away. A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologist arrived at the scene too late to save the bear's life; however, he measured the animal and took a hair sample before the bear was buried in the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area.
