NHTSA Pushes for Car Seat Registrations during Child Passenger Safety Week

The week of Sept. 13-19 is National Child Safety Passenger Safety Week, a seven day period dedicated to discussing and promoting the safety of children while riding as passengers in motor vehicles.

It is an unfortunate reality that Motor vehicle crashes are the number one leading cause of death among children ages one to 19. About one-third of children under 13 years of age killed incar accidents were not in car seats or wearing seatbelts.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is using this week to encourage parents and caregivers to register their childs car seat. If a car seat is part of a recall, caregivers are much more likely to be notified of the recall if the seat is registered.

Last year, more than six million car seats were recalled for a safety defect. Unfortunately, fewer than half of those recalled car seats have been repaired. If you need to check if your childs car seat was recalled, visit the NHTSA website.

Florida law states that any child under seven years of age must be seated in a federally-approved car seat. Failing to have your child in the proper car seat can result in a $60 fine and three points against your license.

After determining if your child is in the right seat for their age, read the instructions and labels that come with the seat to make sure it is properly installed. If youre unsure about whether your childs seat is installed correctly, get the seat inspected.

For Child Passenger Safety Week, several events have planned ahead to give parents adequate chances to get their childs seat checked. Police departments, Fire Rescue stations and other organizations also offer free seat inspection stations year-round.

AtGordon & Partners, we encourage all parents to register their childs car seat and get it checked to ensure their child is safe as a vehicle passenger.
