A newly released report from the U.S. Justice Departments Civil Rights Division accused Florida healthcare of being out of compliance with federal law regarding adult nursing homes. Federal civil rights lawyers is claiming that Florida nursing homes are hosting disabled children by force, pushing them to leave their parents to live in these institutions.
The secretary of the state Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), Liz Dudek, is giving instructions for her staff to speak to each and every parent of a child living in a nursing home. In an effort to determine whether or not living in this institution is in fact the best decision for their child, these Florida healthcare administrators will visit literally hundreds of children living in the geriatric homes across the state.
During a news conference, Dudek told the press that everyone, including this fragile population, deserves to be cared for with the least restricted mean. Thats where we want children to be. While federal rights lawyers are claiming that these children are separated from their parents unnecessarily, Dudek believes that Florida is in full compliance.
Across the state there are approximately 221 children living in nursing homes because of their medical condition. These children are dispersed in areas like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, St. Petersburg, Orlando, and Tampa.
