As a part of a much larger investigation where 26 people are charged to date, two mothers from South Florida are being sentenced to jail time for staged accident insurance fraud. While insurance fraud is a commonly committed act in the state of Florida, staged insurance fraud has become an exceedingly critical problem during recent economic downfalls.
In this situation, two mothers staged a car wreck, one of which used her five children as a part of the plan. The two women include Ana Ovando, a 42 year old, and Janice Velez, both of which are from West Palm Beach. Ovando was sentenced to over six years in prison following her conviction of mail fraud. Velez, however, was sentenced to two years in prison for being a part of the same arrangement.
According to evidence from law enforcement, the two moms submitted false insurance claims for both massage therapy and chiropractic care. Neither of these two claims was factual, as neither party needed or received these treatments. Committing fraud on insurers continues to be an issue in the state of Florida as well as throughout the nation.
