Burry Stander, South African 25 year old bicycle legend, was hit and killed by a taxi vehicle while training near his home last Thursday. Standers was amongst the most celebrated athletes in South Africa, having competed in both the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. In addition, Stander placed 5th in last years mountain bike race at the London Games.

As a world champion mountain biker, Stander was one of South Africa's biggest stars. The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) are deeply saddened by the loss of such an incredible athlete and person. The President of the SASCOC, Gideon Sam, stated that Stander was "talented, ultra-competitive but at the same time extremely humble and a true gentleman."

This tragic accident sheds light on the growing issues of bicycle accidents in the United States and throughout the world. Florida is one of the most popular biking states in the U.S. As such, it is absolutely critical that all Florida motorists learn to share the road. As bicycle accidents continue to occur, all drivers must play a role in reducing the number of related injuries and fatalities each year.

Gordon & Doner has supported the bicycle community in Florida for many, many years. If you or a loved one has been injured during a bicycle accident, contact us today for a free, no-obligation consultation.
