Actos (pioglitazone) is a prescription diabetes medication manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals. Meant to be taken orally, the single-ingredient medication is used to improve blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Actos belongs to a class of medications called “thiazolidinediones,” which are known to cause or exacerbate pancreatic cancer and bladder cancer.
If you or someone you love has suffered pancreatic or bladder cancer after taking Actos, you may be entitled to file an Actos lawsuit and receive compensation for your medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

Actos and Bladder Cancer
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), research suggests a possible link between Actos and bladder cancer. In 2011, after analyzing data that was collected over a period of five years, the FDA determined that individuals who used Actos for more than one year were 40 percent more likely to develop bladder cancer.
Since that time, there have been a number of additional studies linking Actos and bladder cancer, including one that showed Actos users had an 83 percent increased risk of developing bladder cancer.
Similar studies on Actos and bladder cancer have been conducted in Germany and France, and these studies have also produced alarming results. Due to cancer-causing Actos side effects, France has suspended all use of the medication, as well as any medication that contains the same active ingredient. Following suit, Germany has recommended that no new patients begin taking Actos.
The signs and symptoms of Actos and bladder cancer include:
- Blood in the urine
- Frequent bladder infections
- Back pain
- Lower abdominal pain
- Painful urination
It is also possible for bladder cancer victims to exhibit no signs or symptoms. In this instance, many patients discover they have the disease only after undergoing a routine urinalysis. For others, the disease is not discovered until it has spread to nearby organs, bones and tissue.
Because Takeda Pharmaceuticals failed to adequately warn patients of the correlation between Actos and bladder cancer, the FDA enforced the addition of a Black Box warning label to inform consumers of the potential risks involved with taking the medication.

Additional Actos Side Effects
In addition to bladder cancer, cancer of the pancreas has also been deemed a serious Actos side effect. According to a study published in the July 2015 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, Actos was associated with a 40 percent increased risk of pancreatic cancer.
The study analyzed long-term medical data from more than 236,000 patients with type 2 diabetes. The increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer while taking Actos was most notably associated with chronic inflammation of the pancreas – something that may also be associated with Actos use.
If you have experience any of the following Actos side effects, it is wise to seek medical attention as soon as possible, as these side effects may be indicative of pancreatic cancer:
- Itchy skin
- Blood clot in the legs or lungs
- Back or lower abdominal pain
- Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin)
- Enlarged gallbladder
- Unexplained weight loss
However, when pancreatic cancer is in its early stages, it does not always cause symptoms. By the time pancreatic cancer symptoms arise, the disease has often grown through the pancreas or spread beyond it.
Both bladder and pancreatic cancer are very real and frightening Actos side effects, and those who were not warned of these potentially life-threatening side effects deserve the utmost in compensation for their injuries and suffering.
