The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved new changes to the labels of the popular blood pressure medication Benicar. The labels were changed to include a warning about the drug’s link to an intestinal condition known as sprue-like enteropathy. The label was also changed to reflect an increased risk of cardiovascular issues in patients taking the medication.

Benicar Side Effects
Benicar and Benicar HCT (olmesartan and medoxomilare) are prescription medications that belong to a class of drugs known as Angiotensin II type 1 receptor blockers. These medications are commonly used to lower high blood pressure. Patients taking Benicar may experience serious side effects that can require hospitalization. These side effects include:
- Acute kidney disease
- Muscle damage
- Bloody urine
- Dangerously low blood pressure
- High levels of fats and uric acid in the blood
- Giant hives
- Joint pain
- High cholesterol
- Kidney failure
Additionally, the FDA has released information pertaining to several cases of severe Benicar side effects that were listed in its Adverse Event Reports System (FAERS). As of 2014, there were 23 reported cases of serious Benicar side effects, including late on-set diarrhea with significant weight loss.
In some of these cases, intestinal villous atrophy (IVA) was also reported. IVA occurs when villi in the lining of the small intestines erodes and no longer works. Without properly functioning villa, individuals are at risk for nutritional deficiencies, severe malnutrition, chronic diarrhea, dehydration and lymphoma.
They are also at risk for developing sprue-like enteropathy, a condition that is similar to celiac disease. Celiac disease occurs when an individual’s immune system attacks a protein called “gluten,” which in turn causes the immune system to attack the individual’s intestinal tract. Gluten can be found in many natural and processed foods, including breads, pastas, cakes, cookies, salad dressings and BBQ sauces.
Much like celiac disease, sprue-like enteropathy can also cause inflammation of the intestinal lining and atrophy (wasting away) of intestinal villa. Signs that you may be suffering from Benicar side effects such as sprue-like enteropathy include:
- Severe, chronic diarrhea
- Weight loss
- Inflammation of the lining of the stomach
- Stomach cramps
- Hair loss
- Chest pain
- Rapid heartbeat
The link between Benicar and enteropathy was first discovered in 2012 when researchers from the Mayo Clinic found that, over a three year period, 22 patients taking Benicar displayed symptoms similar to celiac disease.
According to the FDA, sprue-like enteropathy can develop months – or even years – after taking the drug. In severe cases, patients suffering from the disease may require extensive hospitalization.
If you or someone you love has experienced Benicar side effects such as those listed above, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. It is also important to discuss your medication regimen with your physician. Benicar is a potentially dangerous drug, and the Benicar lawsuit lawyers at Gordon & Doner are here to help all victims who have suffered severe side effects after taking this medication.

Additional Benicar Side Effect Warnings
In 2011, the FDA announced it would be evaluating data from several clinical trials regarding Benicar side effects and patients with type 2 diabetes.
In one trial, scientists analyzed the medical records of 250,000 patients who took Benicar or other similar Angiotensin II type 1 receptor blockers for a period of five years. During the trial, scientists discovered that 65,358 of the patients were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after taking Benicar or a similar medication. According to their findings, scientists determined that Benicar may raise a patient’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by as much as nine percent.
In yet another Benicar side effects trial, patients who were previously diagnosed with type 2 diabetes before taking the medication had a higher rate of death from cardiovascular disease, as opposed to diabetic patients who were not taking the drug.
In the trial, type 2 diabetic patients were given either Benicar or a placebo to determine if Benicar could slow the progression of diabetes-related kidney disease. However, scientists soon observed an unexpected finding; patients with type 2 diabetes had a greater chance of dying from a cardiovascular cause, such as a heart attack, sudden cardiac death or stroke, while taking Benicar. Those in the placebo group did not display an increased risk of death from a cardiovascular incident.
Although the FDA believes the health benefits of Benicar outweigh the potential risks, Benicar may still be dangerous for some users.
