Depakote Lawsuit

injured newbornSince the early 1980s, the prescription medication Depakote has been used to treat several neurological conditions. It is an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizing medication commonly prescribed for seizure disorders, manic or mixed episodes of bipolar disorder, and migraine headaches.

Although the drug has helped millions of people, serious, life-threatening Depakote side effects have recently been exposed.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) first acknowledged the dangers of Depakote in 2006. Research published in the peer-reviewed Neurology Journal revealed that serious, life-threatening birth defects were discovered in about 20 percent of pregnant Depakote users. After the study was published, the FDA required the inclusion of a black-box warning on the drug’s packaging.

Have you or someone you love been affected by severe Depakote side effects? Has your child been diagnosed with a birth defect that may have been caused by Depakote?

Dangerous Depakote Side Effects: Birth Defects

The study published in the Neurology Journal noted 12 serious adverse events among a group of pregnant women who were taking Depakote. Some of the birth defects noted in the study include:

  • Brachycephaly
  • Atrial septal defects
  • Hydronephrosis
  • Undescended tests
  • Hypospadias
  • Cleft palate
  • Abnormally developed limbs
  • Pulmonary stenosis
  • Neural tube defects
  • Spina bifida
  • Anencephaly
  • Hypoplasia

In December 2009, the FDA issued a drug alert that notified health care professionals and patients about the increased risk of major birth defects, specifically neural tube defects, in babies exposed to Depakote, Depakote CP and Depakote ER.

Following the 2009 warning by the FDA, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine revealed that when Depakote is taken during the first trimester, there is an increased risk of six specific birth defects. The risk of spina bifida, in particular, increased twelve-fold for mothers using the drug.

In 2011, the FDA issued another warning about a potential link between decreased cognitive function and the use of Depakote by pregnant women. Studies showed that children of women who took Depakote typically scored lower on IQ and cognitive tests than children of women who did not take the drug.

Two years later, the FDA advised health care professionals that Depakote and other similar medications should not be taken by pregnant women for the prevention of migraine headaches. The warning also advised patients with epilepsy or bipolar disorder to not take the medication, unless other drugs were ineffective in treating their condition or were otherwise unacceptable.

Dangerous Depakote Side Effects: Liver Damage and Pancreatitis

In addition to birth defects, Depakote side effects can include damage to the liver and pancreas. Signs you may be suffering from these conditions include:

  • nausea and vomiting combined with unexplained weakness, confusion or fainting
  • fever, chills, body aches, swollen glands or other flu-like symptoms
  • pain in the upper stomach
  • dark-colored or bloody urine
  • difficulty eating or loss of appetite
  • clay-colored stools
  • jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)

It is important to seek emergency medical attention right away if you experience any of these symptoms while taking this prescription drug. They may indicate liver damage or pancreatitis, which is a painful inflammation of the pancreas.

Patients taking this medication are also at risk for other Depakote side effects that are typically less severe, but that can also indicate an underlying health concern. These side effects include:

  • bruising easily
  • urinating less than usual
  • feelings of extreme drowsiness
  • lack of coordination
  • hallucinations
  • double vision
  • rapid back-and-forth movements of the eyes
  • thoughts of suicide

Depokate side effects can cause debilitating pain, life-altering injuries and even death. At Gordon & Doner, we firmly believe that all pharmaceutical companies that produce harmful drugs should be held accountable for their negligent and unethical actions.

For many women, warnings from the FDA came too late, as their children had long ago suffered severe birth defects caused by this dangerous medication. For others, the Depakote side effects destroyed their liver, pancreas or the delicate balance of chemicals in their brain.

If you or someone you know was harmed after taking this drug, the skilled Depakote lawsuit attorneys at Gordon & Doner can help.

If you took this drug while pregnant and your child suffered a birth defect, we can help you fight for the justice and compensation that both you and your child deserve. Many mothers have filed Depakote lawsuits against Abbott Laboratories, the drug’s manufacturer, for failing to disclose the dangers their unborn children were exposed to.

If you have suffered irreversible damage to your liver or pancreas, or if you have suffered any other harmful side effects, our experienced Depakote lawsuit attorneys can help you receive compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
