OxyElite Pro Side Effects
Marketed as a “super thermogenic fat burner,” OxeyElite Pro initially contained DMAA, a stimulant with effects similar to amphetamines and ephedrine.
In November 2013, certain OxyElite Pro products were voluntarily recalled due to the risk of potentially life-threatening liver injuries. Eventually, the manufacturer of the supplement, USPlabs, replaced the DMAA with another supplement after DMAA was linked to a deadly outbreak of non-viral hepatitis. However, the replacement supplement, aegeline, was also linked to liver injuries.
Prior to issuing the recall, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about recent findings that linked the use of OxeyElite Pro to reports of liver injuries and disease.
Some liver injuries and illnesses linked to OxyElite Pro include:
- Acute hepatitis
- Liver damage
- Liver failure and acute liver failure
USPlabs was also warned about the possibility that their product could cause liver failure, after several victims in Hawaii underwent a liver transplant after using OxyElite Pro. Many of these victims also suffered serious complications as a result of the liver transplant, including infections, blood clots, leaking bile ducts and rejection of the donated liver.
Some other serious medical complications reported by users of OxyElite Pro include:
- Heart attack
- Kidney damage or kidney failure
- Sudden cardiac death
- Cold sweats
If you or a loved one has experienced severe side effects after taking OxyElite Pro, you may be entitled to file an OxyElite Pro lawsuit. FDA OxyElite Pro Recall
In October 2013, the FDA issued a warning letter about aegeline, an unapproved ingredient found in OxyElite Pro. The FDA warned that if the company did not voluntarily recall its products, it would order the company to stop distributing them. The follow products were recalled on November 19, 2013.
- OxyElite Pro Super Thermo capsules
- OxyElite Pro Ultra-Intense Thermo capsules
- OxyElite Pro Super Thermo Powder (in fruit punch, blue raspberry, grape bubblegum, green apple and raspberry lemonade)
In support of an OxyElite Pro recall, the FDA reviewed more than 40 records from the Hawaii Department of Health concerning serious liver-related side effects. The FDA found that 58 percent of patients who had suffered liver injury had used an OxyElite Pro supplement before becoming ill. Additionally, about 63 percent of these patients reported that OxyElite Pro was the only supplement they had been taking at the time.
According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), there are 56 cases of irreversible liver damage allegedly linked to the supplement. Prior to the OxyElite Pro recall, the CDC knew of at least one death linked to the supplement, while several other cases required liver transplants.
Around the same time, the U.S. Marine Corps banned the product on military bases after two U.S. Army soldiers died during training sessions after taking a supplement containing DMAA.
As the investigation into the OxyElite Pro recall continues, the FDA has advised consumers to discontinue using any dietary supplements labeled OxyElite Pro or VERSA-1. They have also advised against using any supplement that contains DMAA or aegeline.
Consumers who believe they have been harmed by a dietary supplement can report the issue to the FDA’s MedWatch. You should also contact the reputable attorneys at Gordon & Doner to discuss filing an OxyElite Pro lawsuit.

In the instance of the OxyElite Pro recall, some victims suffered liver damage that was so severe and life-threatening that it warranted a liver transplant.
