Pradaxa and Bleeding

Pradaxa is part of a class of prescription medications known as “anti-coagulants.” Anti-coagulants work by inhibiting the enzyme that allows blood to clot. Under normal circumstances, blood clotting in a necessary function. When someone receives a wound that causes them to bleed, the body produces enzymes that cause the blood to clot, or “coagulate”, at the site of the wound in order to prevent excessive blood loss, the introduction of bacteria into the body or dangerously low blood pressure.

Simply speaking, when blood coagulates, it becomes thicker and stickier. For most individuals, coagulated blood is produced only when needed. However, other individuals produce coagulated blood when it is not needed. Even still, certain individuals produce coagulated blood that is thick enough to cause excessive stress on their heart or other internal organs.

While anti-coagulation medications like Pradaxa can be helpful for individuals who are at risk for severe health complications due to thickened blood, the possibility these medications may thin a person’s blood too much is a very real and frightening concern.

In fact, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been investigating Pradaxa as it relates to internal bleeding. Internal bleeding can be caused by blood that is too thin. The FDA has determined that while Pradaxa has its benefits, patients need to be aware of the risks of internal bleeding.

If you believe the internal bleeding you or a loved one has suffered was caused by this medication, you may be entitled to file a Pradaxa bleeding lawsuit and receive the financial compensation you deserve. Don’t delay, call our Pradaxa lawsuit lawyers today.

Numerous Studies Reveal Dangers of Pradaxa

According to a 2013 study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, patients who suffer from atrial fibrillation have a 38 percent higher chance of having a heart attack while taking Pradaxa.

Also in 2013, two doctors presented a report of several Pradaxa study results at the Congress of the International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis meeting in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Ten studies involving 23, 839 Pradaxa patients were included in the doctors’ report. Among all of the Pradaxa patients involved, 292 suffered a myocardial infarction, which is the medical term for a heart attack.

According to the studies, the overall risk of having a heart attack was 32 percent higher for all patients taking Pradaxa. When compared to patients who were not taking any anti-coagulant medication, the risk of having a heart attack was 70 percent higher for Pradaxa patients. As compared to patients taking Warfarin or other anti-coagulant medications, Pradaxa patients had a 38 percent increased risk of suffering a heart attack. Among patients treated with 150 milligrams or more of Pradaxa, the risk of heart attack was increased by as much as 45 percent.

All of the increases denoted in these studies were regarded by the doctors as “statistically significant” and a probable indication that Pradaxa may not be safe for patient use.
