Patients who took the antipsychotic medication Risperdal may have experienced serious, life-threatening side effects such as Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, Tardive Dyskinesia or a stroke. Young males taking this medication may have experienced breast enlargement (gynecomastia). Additionally, the death of several patients may be linked to complications stemming from Risperdal side effects.
After receiving reports of 16 deaths and 37 adverse health issues linked to Risperdal, the FDA alerted physicians and healthcare professionals about the harmful, potentially fatal consequences of using the drug.

Risperdal Side Effects
Risperdal belongs to a class of medications known as antipsychotics. It is most commonly prescribed for the treatment of mental disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and irritability due to autism.
In 2012, Johnson & Johnson settled the first of approximately 130 lawsuits that claimed Risperdal caused gynecomastia in young male patients. The lawsuits alleged Risperdal stimulates prolactin, which is a hormone responsible for breast growth and milk production. Men afflicted with this condition often feel too embarrassed to participate in social activities and can become withdrawn.
Gynecomastia causes the following symptoms:
- Enlarged breasts
- Breast swelling and tenderness
- Nipple discharge
- Pain in one or both breasts
The link between Risperdal and gynecomastia was first noted in 1999 in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, and then again in 2009 in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Pharmacology. A study on Risperdal side effects showed increased levels of prolactin in the blood of young male patients up to two years after the drug was stopped. The changes caused by prolactin may go away on their own, or they may persist indefinitely. If the effects persist, surgery is often required.
In addition to gynecomastia, other serious Risperdal side effects include Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) and Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS). TD causes a patient to suffer uncontrollable movements of their arms, legs, torso and head. The movements are repetitive in nature and include episodes of facial grimacing, neck spasms, leg and arm flailing, and continuous eye blinking. The disease is painful and disruptive, and often results in permanent disfigurement. There is no known cure for TD.
In 2000, a Philadelphia jury awarded $6.7 million to a woman who developed TD after taking Risperdal to treat bipolar disorder. In February 2014, a Chicago jury awarded $1.5 million to the family of a 15-year-old boy who developed TD after taking Risperdal for irritability caused by autism.
NMS is a rare, life-threatening neurological emergency that can develop after taking antipsychotic medication for as little as four days. Symptoms of this potentially deadly Risperdal side effect includes:
- Severe rigidity of the muscles, often resulting in a condition known as “lead pipe” rigidity
- Fever and sweating
- Altered mental status, including paranoid behavior
- Dangerously high blood pressure
- Excessive saliva secretion
- Loss of consciousness
