Xarelto® has been associated with serious, disabling or fatal injuries, including blood clots or thromboembolic events, which is the blocking of a blood vessel by a particle that has broken away from another clot.
Though complications with blood thinners may occur, there is no antidote to reverse the effects of Xarelto. In the event of an emergency, patients may be at risk of suffering life-threatening internal hemorrhaging.
Gordon & Doner is committed to holding negligent companies, such as prescription drug manufacturers, accountable for failing to inform consumers about dangerous side effects. Our firm is currently investigating potential Xarelto lawsuits on behalf of patients who suffered injuries or illness after taking Xarelto.
Xarelto® Linked to Blood Clots
In March 2016, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) launched an investigation to determine if the clinical trial for Xarelto was invalid due to faulty blood-testing devices. Questions began to arise about the devices after they were recalled in 2014 for providing inaccurate results. Regulators must now determine if the devices malfunctioned during testing, which could have tainted the results of the clinical trial.
The initial clinical trial of Xarelto evaluated more than 14,000 patients and compared the medication to warfarin, another popular blood thinner. The study found that Xarelto was no more effective than warfarin, and the risks were comparable. However, the most common side effect was uncontrollable bleeding, specifically in the stomach and intestines.
In 2011, the FDA released a 388-page report by FDA staff reviewers who were opposed to using the dangerous drug in patients with atrial fibrillation.
In October 2012, a non-profit consumer safety group, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, issued a report on adverse events reported to the FDA during the first quarter of the year. According to the QuarterWatch report, Xarelto was associated with more than 350 adverse reports of serious, disabling or fatal injuries. Blood clots reported to the FDA accounted for at least 158 of those cases.
These cases described severe blood clots in younger patients who were taking the anticoagulant after knee or hip replacement surgery.

Multidistrict Litigation in Xarelto Lawsuits
In December 2014, consolidated proceedings were established for all Xarelto injury cases. The claims will be processed through multidistrict litigation (MDL) and will involve approximately four trials. The first trial will likely begin in fall 2016.
Xarelto lawsuit claimants allege that Bayer Healthcare and Johnson & Johnson failed to adequately warn consumers and the medical community about the risks of uncontrollable bleeding events. Furthermore, the medical community was not made aware of how to stabilize and treat a Xarelto user in the event of complications.
