Recall Issued After Carcinogenic Detected

Research conducted by Valisure found that dozens of sunscreen and sun care products contain benzene – a known carcinogen. Benzene is a colorless, flammable liquid that is used to make plastics, rubber, paints and pesticides. It also occurs naturally in crude oil and gasoline and is highly toxic.

Valisure has filed a Citizen Petition with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to recall a list of products in which benzene was detected. This prompted Johnson & Johnson’s voluntary recall of some Neutrogena sunscreens with different sun protection levels, from SPF 30 to 100.

Johnson & Johnson stated that benzene is not an ingredient used in the sunscreens and that the recall was done “out of an abundance of caution”.
