Recall Issued After Carcinogenic Detected

Research conducted by Valisure found that dozens of sunscreen and sun care products contain benzene – a known carcinogen. Benzene is a colorless, flammable liquid that is used to make plastics, rubber, paints and pesticides. It also occurs naturally in crude oil and gasoline and is highly toxic.

Valisure has filed a Citizen Petition with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to recall a list of products in which benzene was detected. This prompted Johnson & Johnson’s voluntary recall of some Neutrogena sunscreens with different sun protection levels, from SPF 30 to 100.

Johnson & Johnson stated that benzene is not an ingredient used in the sunscreens and that the recall was done “out of an abundance of caution”.

An investigation is underway into how benzene may have gotten into certain sunscreens. Valisure believes that benzene may have contaminated the products during production. There is no safe level of benzene that can exist in sunscreen and sun care products.

Health Issues Linked to Benzene Exposure

When sunscreen containing benzene is applied to the skin, the body can absorb it, potentially causing the chemical to enter the bloodstream. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), long-term exposure to high levels of benzene can cause cancer and other serious health risks.

Benzene exposure has been linked to leukemia, a deadly cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Other types of cancer caused by high levels of benzene are:

  • Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL)
  • Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS)
  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma

Common leukemia symptoms include:

  • Bone pain or tenderness
  • Easy bleeding or bruising
  • Enlarged liver or spleen
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Fever or chills
  • Frequent or severe infections
  • Night sweats
  • Nosebleeds
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Unintended weight loss

Anyone who has used a recalled sunscreen and is experiencing these symptoms or early signs of benzene exposure, such as headaches, dizziness, vomiting or tremors, should contact a medical professional as soon as possible. The sooner your condition is treated, the better your prognosis may be.

Medical records from your treatment can help show the extent and severity of your condition and how that condition has impacted your life.

It is also important that you preserve any evidence, such as the aerosol spray bottles themselves and any purchase receipts. Our firm can also help you gather additional evidence to support your case.

Neutrogena Sunscreen Lawsuits Filed

Johnson & Johnson has encouraged consumers to stop using the recalled Neutrogena sunscreens, but that has not stopped the filing of multiple class-action lawsuits.

Another lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California is seeking an injunction and damages on behalf of consumers who purchased the affected products.

Other claims former users may make in lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson include:

  • Failing to warn of the possible health risks of using these products
  • Selling unfit products with unsafe levels of benzene
  • Marketing these products as safe and healthy to use
  • Knowing these products were defective and cancer-causing
