FDA Warnings About Limbrel

In early Sept. 2017, the FDA began investigating an increase in reports about serious adverse events involving Limbrel, a capsule pill that has been advertised as a medical food used to “manage the metabolic processes associated with osteoarthritis.”

By Nov. 9, 2017, the FDA had received nearly 200 adverse event reports associated with the drug. Within the reports was enough information to identify a link between Limbrel and drug-induced liver injury, pancreatitis and hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

The information was enough for the FDA to issue a public advisory on Nov. 21, 2017, warning that the use of Limbrel can cause patients to develop severe adverse events, which can be life-threatening, and that all patients should stop taking the drug immediately.

Following the warning, the FDA requested that Primus Pharmaceuticals, the drug’s manufacturer, issue a voluntary recall of the product on Nov. 30, 2017. After the company failed to issue a recall, the FDA formally requested that the company stop distribution and issue an immediate recall of the following products:

  • Limbrel (flavocoxid) 250 mg capsules
  • Limbrel250 (250 mg flavocoxid with 50 mg citrated zinc bisglycinate) capsules
  • Limbrel (flavocoxid) 500 mg capsules
  • Limbrel500 (500 mg flavocoxid with 50 mg citrated zinc bisglycinate) capsules

The FDA has recommended a Class I recall of the drug, which represents a serious health hazard that may be life-threatening.

What is Medical Food?

In its formal communication with Primus Pharmaceuticals, the FDA stated that Limbrel is an unapproved new drug that can cause serious harm to patients. The letter noted that Primus Pharmaceuticals misbranded Limbrel using misleading and false claims that the capsule is a medical food used to manage the effects of osteoarthritis.

Medical foods are in a distinct category of product separate from supplements and prescription drugs. According to the Orphan Drug Act (21 U.S.C. § 360ee(b)(3)), medical foods are created to be used under the supervision of a physician to help with specific dietary needs and nutritional requirements of certain diseases and conditions.

However, the FDA noted that because Limbrel is intended for the cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of a disease, it is therefore not a medical food and is instead a new drug that does not have approval from the FDA to be sold to patients.

Furthermore, the FDA noted that Limbrel is not recognized as safe and effective for its intended use.
