Electrical Burn Injury

– Client Reviews

electrical burnAn electrical burn injury is caused when an arc of electrical current travels through the air or via a conductive device and enters a person’s body.

When a person comes in contact with an electrical current, the transmission of energy travels from the power source directly to the person, causing an electrical burn. The burn injury is the result of heat generated by the flow of electricity through the victim’s body.

In addition to severe burns, electrical currents can cause a victim to suffer a heart attack, organ failure or respiratory arrest.

If your burn injury resulted from the negligence of another, you may be entitled to file a personal injury lawsuit and receive compensation for your medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Contact Gordon & Partners today for more information.

Injuries Resulting From Electrical Burns

According to a study released by the United States Department of Labor, individuals are most likely to receive an electrical burn injury to one or both of their hands, as opposed to any other part of the body. Hands are the most common entry point for an electrical current because individuals are typically working closely with an electrical device when an accident occurs.

There are a multitude of injuries a person can sustain as a result of being shocked by electricity. While the most obvious is an electrical burn injury to the skin, in many cases, serious internal injuries can also occur.

Some serious internal injuries include:

  • Cardiac arrest
  • Damaged nerves
  • Coma or brain death
  • Muscle wasting due to nerve damage
  • Tissue destruction
  • Internal bleeding
  • Involuntary twitches or spasms
  • Inability to breathe without medical assistance

In some instances, internal injuries are not immediately apparent to either the victim or observers. However, if the injuries are left untreated, they can quickly result in death. With this in mind, emergency medical treatment should be administered as soon as possible to anyone who has been involved in an electrical burn situation.

If your injuries were caused by another’s negligence, call 1 (855) 722-2552 today.

Sources of Electrical Burn Injuries

There is potential for an electrical burn injury to occur wherever live electricity is present. While many people assume an electrical device cannot harm them if it is not being used, electrical currents are still flowing to the device if it is plugged into an outlet.

Therefore, it is important to note that electronic appliances do not have to be turned on and operating in order to conduct enough electricity to cause a burn or other injuries. If an electrical device comes in contact with water, it can also cause a severe shock and potentially deadly injuries.

Touching electrical appliances with wet hands or feet is extremely dangerous. Being wet with salty water after swimming in the ocean or perspiring heavily is particularly dangerous, as salt water is a much better conductor of electricity than fresh water.

In the household, the bathroom is one of the more likely places a wet person may come in contact with electrical devices. For safety, power outlets in bathrooms should be placed away from bathtubs, showers and sinks to discourage the use of electronics nearby.

Appliances such as hair dryers, laptop computers or a charging cellphone should never be used while sitting in a bathtub. Even battery-powered devices should be avoided, as they are capable of generating enough electric voltage to be lethal.

Exposed electrical outlets, fallen powerlines and sticking items into an electrical source can also contribute to serious burns or other injuries.
