General Motors Set To Recall More Than 700,000 Vehicles Over Ignition Concerns

General Motors (GM) has announced that it is recalling more than 700,000 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 vehicles in the North America due to a faulty ignition that may cause essential safety and engine components to be unintentionally turned off.

GM has associated the weight of the key ring as being a contributing factor in the issue that has affected 2005 to 2007 model year vehicles.

According to a GM spokesman, the auto manufacturer is aware of at least five fatal front seat and frontal impact accidents where the airbags did not deploy, along with 17 other collisions where the airbags failed to perform as intended.

In a filing to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the parts involved were manufactured in Mexico and may not meet the company specifications for those parts.

Dealers have been advised to replace the ignition switch free of charge and for owners to remove any non-essential keys and items from key rings that the ignition key is attached to.
