A 70-year-old man died Wednesday after a crash on Boynton Beach Boulevard, just west of Florida’s Turnpike around 1 p.m., according to a Palm Beach County Sheriffs Office vehicle homicide investigations report.
Clarence E. Stalsworth was killed when his Jeep hit a power pole. The accident closed Boynton Beach Boulevard as well as the entrance and exit ramps to the turnpike for most of the afternoon. As of 6:45 p.m., the ramps were reopened.
According to the police report, Anthony Distefano was driving his gray, four-door 2013 Chrysler westbound on Boynton Beach Boulevard when he was hit from behind by the Jeep. Distefano, 71, accelerated and drove on to the sidewalk, while Stalsworths Jeep hit a power pole, then kept going, hitting a few palm trees and then another larger power pole which split in two pieces, the report said.
Stalsworth and his passenger, Nell Stalsworth, 69, were taken to Bethesda Medical Center West where he later died. She had minor injuries. The Post could not confirm how they were related. According to the report, neither occupant in the Jeep was wearing a seat belt. Distefano had no injuries.
Morton Brooks and Adele Armm witnessed the crash. They said they were driving home for lunch when they saw a red SUV come down the road and hit a second car. The SUV hit a pole, causing live wires to fall just feet from the ground, Brooks said.
A sheriffs spokesman said drivers were rerouted away from the area because power lines were down. FPL was called the scene to fix the power poles, which closed the road for most of the afternoon, according to a sheriff spokesman.
Armm said the corner where the turnpike and Boynton Beach Boulevard is dangerous and that there had been some recent wrecks.
