NHTSA “Tirewise” Campaign Attempts To Reduce Tire Related Fatalities

It’s an often overlooked component of many motor vehicle safety systems, yet tires are one of the most fundamental pieces of safety equipment on any vehicle.

With this in mind, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has created a new tire-awareness campaign titled “Tirewise” to help alert drivers to this potential safety hazard.

According to NHTSA records, more than 11,000 accidents in the Unites States occur each year due to a defect with the tires on the at-fault vehicle which in recent years, has amounted to hundreds of unnecessary auto accident fatalities.

In a statement from Transportation Secretary Anthony Fox:

“This campaign will help consumers make more informed choices every step of the way when it comes to choosing and caring for their tires keeping them safer and saving them money at the same time,”

Tirewise also hopes to address the common issues that drivers can check which include:

• Checking for over or underinflated tires using a pressure gauge
• Being able to identify bald tires; including tread wear and other defects that may be visible on the tire
• Identifying when a tire was manufactured, as despite appearing in good condition, tires do deteriorate over time

… among many other points.

To supplement that campaign, the Administration is also providing tire sellers with instructional videos and other information.
