As Florida families returned home from holiday trips, multiple traffic accidents occurred on Florida’s Turnpike as well as Interstate 95. These accidents caused traffic jams as well as several serious injuries.
Last weekend marked the end of the holiday season. With many travelers on the road returning home, multiple vehicle accidents took place on Sunday.
Sunday morning around 2:30 a.m., the driver of a truck towing a boat fell asleep at the wheel, crashing into a light pole in Riviera Beach. While the boat became lodged over the vehicles roof, the driver and passenger were uninjured; the driver was charged with reckless driving.
An early morning crash in West Palm Beach injured two passengers; the driver fled the scene on foot, according to witnesses. As of late Sunday, police were still searching for the driver.
An accident blocking northbound lanes occurred on the Florida Turnpike near Donald Ross Road around 12:40 p.m. Lanes were cleared by 1:35 p.m., though backups persisted.
Rain caused a number of accidents in the Indian River County area of I-95, slowing traffic. Around 5 p.m., an accident occurred near mile marker 147, closing the southbound lanes.
A multi-vehicle crash resulted in several serious injuries in Martin County around 4:30 pm on the southbound lanes of the Florida Turnpike.
